  2. How do I create a DocPager account?

There are two types of DocPager accounts:

    • DocPager App Account: This type of account is created when you first download the DocPager iPhone App and can be used to send and receive pages. You can even login to docpager.com to track the status of sent pages using your phone number as your username.
    • DocPager.com Account: For users such as hospital operators who only need to send pages, this type of account is perfect and completely free of charge. To sign up, simply go to docpager.com.

  3. How much does a subscription to DocPager cost?

To receive pages, all new DocPager users receive a 30 day free subscription followed by unlimited paging for only $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year (both in the US and Canada). Payments are securely made using Apple's In-App Purchase and are billed to your iTunes Account. Sending pages from docpager.com and the DocPager App are always free.

  4. Am I committed to a contract with DocPager?

Absolutely not. DocPager will never require you to sign a contact for using DocPager. Both monthly and yearly subscriptions are available and at any time, you can see the current expiration date and extend your subscription in the Settings tab of the DocPager App. Once a subscription is expired, you will be unable to receive pages until it has been extended.

If your subscription has expired and you receive a page, DocPager will alert you that a new page has been received and prompt you to renew your subscription.

If you have colleagues who you'd like to try DocPager, please send us their information using the "Invite Colleagues" feature in the Settings tab and we'll be happy to invite them to try DocPager. Any information you provide will never be shared or used for any other purposes.

DocPager App

  1. How do I know when a page I sent has been received and read?

DocPager uses a simple system of color coding so you can see at a glance when a page has been sent, received or read:

    • Amber - Sent: The page has been received by DocPager servers and the recipient has been alerted that they have a new page.
    • Blue - Received: The recipient has responded to the alert and opened the DocPager App to download new pages.
    • Green - Read: The page has been viewed by the recipient.

Precise timestamps of when a page has been sent, received and read are displayed below the page text when you view a page.

  2. Does the DocPager App have to be running for me to receive a page?

No, DocPager uses Apple's Push Notification system that's built into all iPhones to alert you when you have new pages. Simply swipe the push notification to launch the DocPager App and mark your new pages as received. DocPager realizes that in a busy hospital environment, it's easy to miss a page, so you'll receive a reminder that you have new pages every 5 minutes for up to 1 hour after a page has been sent.

  3. What if my iPhone is off when a page comes in?

The page will stay in a "Sent" state while your iPhone is off so the sender will know you are currently unable to receive pages. When you power your iPhone back on, you will receive a notification that you have a new page. Once you launch the DocPager App, the page will be marked as "Received."

A sent page is held by the server and continuous attempts to deliver are made until the page is received once your phone is turned back on. The sender will see the "Received" notification on their screen at that time.

  4. Can I turn off the "beeper sound" but still receive pages?

Pressing the button on the top of the iPhone will silence any alert currently playing. To mute audio alerts, you can turn off the beeper sound just as you would mute your iPhone by switching the side switch on the upper left to its red (mute) position. You can still receive pages and your iPhone will now vibrate to alert you when you have new pages.

  5. How do I stop the new page alert from repeating every five minutes?

When a new page alert is displayed, simply swiping the DocPager icon from left to right for iOS 5, or touching the View/Open button in the alert window for iOS 4, will launch the DocPager App and prevent further alerts until you receive a new page. Alternatively, you can launch the DocPager App by touching the DocPager icon.

  6. Do I have to confirm that I've read a page?

No - that's the beauty of DocPager! Once you've received an alert that you have new pages and opened the DocPager App, the sender sees a blue icon indicating that the page has been received along with the date and time of receipt. Once you open the page to see the full message text, the sender sees a green icon indicating the page has been read, along with the date and time when you read it.

  7. Does DocPager use WiFi or cellular (3G) networks?

DocPager will use whichever network connection is available; however, Apple designed the iPhone to use WiFi networks first if they are available. If the DocPager App is unable to communicate with DocPager servers over a WiFi network, you will receive an error message prompting you to turn off WiFi.

  8. If I'm sending a page to another DocPager user, do we both need to be using WiFi or cellular (3G) networks?

No, both users can be using the same or a completely different type of network connection. DocPager works reliably and quickly on both WiFi and cellular networks.

  9. I don't have a iPhone. Can I still use DocPager?

Pages can be sent for free by creating an account at DocPager.com. Currently, however, to receive pages the DocPager iPhone App is required. DocPager is actively working on supporting additional smartphones. Please contact us at support@docpager.com and tell us what smartphone you want us to support next.

Privacy and Security

  1. Are my pages secure?

DocPager is designed for security by using SSL encryption technology to protect all message content to and from our secure firewall protected servers. Additionally, if Passcode Lock is enabled on your iPhone 3GS or later, the page content on the iPhone is stored in an encrypted database.

  2. Why do old pages disappear after a certain amount of time?

To address patient privacy and confidentiality concerns, incoming and outgoing pages are automatically deleted from your iPhone after 2 weeks.

  3. How can I keep just anyone from sending me pages from the website?

To restrict who can send you pages, a four digit PIN code can be set under the Settings tab of the DocPager App. Simply provide this code to whomever you want to be able to page you.

  4. Do I need someone's PIN to send them a page?

For ease of use, most users choose not to set a PIN code for DocPager, so only their phone number is needed to send them a page. If, however, you try to send a page to a user who has set a PIN code, an error message will advise you to provide the PIN code. Once you enter the PIN, the DocPager App will store it so you don't need to re-enter it unless it's been changed.

  5. Does DocPager meet HIPAA regulations?

Conceptualized by a physician, DocPager has been designed to meet security, encryption and privacy HIPAA guidelines as follows:

    • DocPager uses SSL encryption technology to protect all message content
    • DocPager servers are protected by secure firewalls
    • If Passcode Lock is enabled, most iPhones will store page content in an encrypted database
    • Every two weeks, old incoming and outgoing pages are automatically deleted from your iPhone

Total compliance with HIPPA depends greatly on how DocPager is used and thus, DocPager is unable to guarantee complete HIPPA compliance. Please contact us at support@docpager.com for more information on how DocPager can customize a solution to meet your needs.
